How Do You Dispose of an Old Refrigerator?

· Appliance Removal

To dispose of an old refrigerator in North Carolina, have it picked up by a junk removal or appliance recycling service, or arrange a bulky-item pickup through your city if one is available. Don't set it out with regular household collection. Refrigerators and freezers contain refrigerant that federal rules require to be recovered by a certified technician before the unit is scrapped, and North Carolina handles large appliances, known as "white goods," separately from everyday household waste. Junk A Haulics removes and recycles old refrigerators and freezers across Raleigh, Cary, Sanford and the Sandhills.

Why can't a refrigerator go out with regular household pickup?

Two reasons. First, the refrigerant inside, plus the foam insulation in many older units, has to be handled properly. The U.S. EPA requires refrigerant to be recovered before disposal. Second, North Carolina manages white goods (refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves and water heaters) through separate programs rather than regular household collection. The metal is valuable for recycling, so it's kept out of the regular stream.

What's the easiest way to get rid of an old fridge?

  • Junk removal pickup: the crew carries it out, loads it and takes it to a recycler. No dolly or truck needed.
  • Retailer haul-away: some stores take the old one when they deliver a new one. Ask when you buy.
  • City or county programs: some offer bulky-item or white goods collection with specific rules and schedules. Check your local public works page.
  • Donation: a clean, working fridge may be accepted by a local charity.

How do you prepare a refrigerator for removal?

  1. Empty it completely and toss any food.
  2. Unplug it and let the freezer defrost a day ahead, with towels underneath.
  3. Shut off and disconnect the water line if it has an ice maker.
  4. Tape the doors shut for the move.
  5. Clear a path to the door.

Never leave an old fridge outside with the doors on. Children can get trapped inside.

Is this a good time to replace an old fridge?

Fall is a smart time to clear out the garage beer fridge or the second freezer that's been running for years. Older units run hardest during North Carolina summers, when garages can bake in 90°F+ heat, and they can be expensive to run. As the holidays approach, many families upgrade kitchen appliances ahead of hosting.
