Is It Time to Tear Out Your Old Deck?

· Light Demolition

It's time to tear out an old deck when boards are soft or spongy, posts or joists show rot, railings wobble, fasteners are rusted through, or the deck pulls away from the house. Those are structural problems, not cosmetic ones, and a deck in that shape can be a safety hazard. Deck removal means taking the deck apart board by board, pulling posts and footings as needed, and hauling the lumber away. Junk A Haulics handles deck removal and light demolition across Raleigh, Cary, Sanford and the Sandhills.

What are the signs a deck needs to come out?

  • Soft or spongy boards that give when you step on them.
  • Rot at posts, joists or the ledger board, where the deck attaches to the house. Poke suspect wood with a screwdriver. If it sinks in, it's rotted.
  • Wobbly or loose railings.
  • Rusted fasteners, nails or connectors.
  • Separation from the house, or a deck that leans or sags.

Why do decks wear out faster in North Carolina?

Central North Carolina's humid summers, with highs around 90°F and heavy rain from summer storms and tropical systems, keep wood damp for long stretches. Moisture plus heat is what drives rot and fungus, especially where boards meet posts or sit close to the ground. Fall and winter add freeze-thaw cycles, with December lows near the low 30s°F, which can work fasteners loose over time. A deck that wasn't sealed regularly ages fast here.

What does deck removal involve?

  1. Clear furniture, grills and planters off the deck.
  2. Remove railings, then decking boards.
  3. Take down joists and beams, and detach the ledger from the house carefully.
  4. Pull posts and break out footings if the space is being cleared completely.
  5. Load and haul everything away, recycling metal and reusable lumber when possible.

Should you remove a deck in the fall?

Fall is a great time. October and November bring mild days in the 60s and 70s°F, so it's comfortable work, and clearing the deck before winter means you can plan a new deck, patio or yard space over the winter and build in spring. If there's a hot tub on or beside the deck, see our guide on getting rid of an old hot tub.

Junk A Haulics has handled light demolition in Sanford, Raleigh and the surrounding communities since 2017. See our deck removal service and light demolition services. After a storm, our guide to storm debris cleanup in North Carolina covers broken decks and fencing too.

Can you remove just part of a deck?

Yes, as long as the remaining structure stands on its own. We'll let you know if it doesn't.
